When most people hear “SEO,” they think of Google. Ranking on that first page feels like the holy grail of online marketing. And yes, it’s powerful. But here’s the thing… most people aren’t search on Google anymore.
Think about your own habits. When you want a new recipe, do you Google it? Or head straight to TikTok? If you’re looking for outfit inspiration, do you check Pinterest before you check a search engine? If you’re hunting for a cool local coffee shop, maybe you check out Reddit instead.
This is why I like to think beyond ‘Search Engine Optimization’ and talk about ‘Search Everywhere Optimization’. Because in today’s digital world, your customers are searching in more than one place, and your business needs to be where they are.
~
Let’s start with the basics. Traditional SEO is all about making your website more visible on Google (along with other search engines, but let’s be honest, it’s mostly Google).
It usually involves three main things:
- Keywords
- Content
- Technical Tweaks
Don’t get me wrong, SEO is still important. If someone searches for “best bakery in Kansas City,” and your bakery pops up in the top results, that can drive real customers to your door. But here’s the catch: SEO only covers one type of search behavior.
And today, search happens everywhere.
~
The way people search has completely changed. Google isn’t the only stop anymore. In fact, for some people, it’s not even the first stop.
Here are a few quick examples:
- TikTok: People use TikTok like a search engine, typing in “best tacos in San Diego” or “how to style curly hair.”
- Instagram: Shoppers browse hashtags and location tags to find boutiques, salons, or local services.
- Reddit: Need to fix something, learn a recipe, or get a product review? Reddit is often the go-to.
- Pinterest: Still a powerhouse for planning: weddings, home décor, even business ideas.
If your business is only optimized for Google, you’re missing out on all the other places where potential customers are actively searching.
~
Here’s the bottom line: people want to find you where they are already hanging out. If your bakery is on Facebook, your boutique shows up in Instagram searches, and your coffee shop is pinned on Pinterest, you’re meeting customers exactly where they’re looking.
Think about it: most small businesses don’t have the budget for huge ad campaigns. But by showing up consistently in search: whether that’s Google, TikTok, or Instagram, you’re building visibility for free. And unlike ads that disappear when you stop paying, optimized content keeps working for you in the background.
Search-everywhere optimization is about making sure you’re not just shouting into the void, but being discoverable in the right places.
~
Traditional SEO will always matter. But in today’s world, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Customers are searching everywhere, and the businesses that take the time to be visible across platforms are the ones that win attention (and sales).
So instead of asking, “How do I rank on Google?” a smarter question might be: “Where are my customers searching, and am I showing up there?”
